What is PIAC?
The Printing Industry Advisory Committee (PIAC) was formed in July 1979 to advise the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) on matters concerning the printing industry.
The members of PIAC are nominated by the CBI and TUC and appointed by HSC to work together with HSE to advise the industry on health and safety. Current membership includes representatives from the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Newspaper Society (NS), Newspaper Publishers Association (NPA), AMICUS.

New asbestos legislation
The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 is in the process of being reviewed and revised by the Health and Safety Commission (HSC). The revisions are required to bring British asbestos regulations into line with European standards; specifically The Asbestos Worker Protection Directive 83/477/EEC as amended. The intention is to simplify the British regulations by bringing together all current asbestos legislation into one new document that will be known as ‘The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 (CAR 2006)’.

BPIF to welcome print management companies into membership
A Resolution allowing all types of print supplier to join the BPIF has been approved overwhelmingly in a ballot of BPIF members. New wording incorporated into the BPIF’s Constitution now provides for the admission into membership of “any firms engaged in production processes associated with printing, or in the supply of printing services”. The change was announced by President Dominic Walsh at the BPIF’s AGM in Sheffield on Wednesday 4 July and opens the door to BPIF membership for print management companies.

The BPIF is taking action on public sector contract notices that demand a payment before pre-qualification documents are released. 24 BBFA members and guests travelled to Milan on a three-day study tour organised by Friedheim International and OMG Milan. Directions’ signals another good summer for print
The summer period continues to surprise printers in its buoyancy, with July’s expectations for the state of trade actually being exceeded over the last three months. Warning of ink price hike
Moira McMillan, British Coatings Federation CEO, confirmed that the market was likely to see a further rise in printing ink prices as a result of the recent surge in the cost of crude oil. This difficult situation is being further exacerbated by reduction in refining capacity in USA, fears regarding supplies from Iran and increasing demand from China, which has resulted in the announcement of pending price increases in the USA.

Changes to Small Firms Loan Guarantee criteria
The criteria for the Small Firms Loan Guarantee (SFLG) will be changing in December 2005. Members may be affected by the decision to restrict the availability of the SFLG to companies younger than five years. In order that loans to businesses that will not be eligible under this new criteria can be guaranteed before 1 December 2005, fully documented applications must be with lenders by close of business on 28 October 2005.
